Music
Subject Coordinator Mrs D Carty
At Moorside Primary Academy, we aim to provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, and to develop the skills to critically appreciate a variety of musical forms. Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It can support children to become confident and allow them to express themselves in unique and exciting ways. A high-quality music curriculum supports children to explore their own creatively through performing, composing and wider listening and engagement. Doing this can support children to develop an in-depth understanding and appreciation of musical culture.
Learning throughout the music curriculum is gradual and progressive which allows children to consolidate and secure their understanding and skills. This is supported through the structure of our curriculum, flash back quizzes and reflective planning. Vocabulary is consistent, repeated and built upon in all units.
We recognise the importance of music within our curriculum as it supports our whole school priorities of physical development and communication and language through playing instruments developing finger strength and manual dexterity. As well as developing spoken language skills through performance and singing.
Our music curriculum is delivered through the Charanga Scheme. We have no music specialists in school using this scheme supports staff with planning and resourcing. Knowledge organisers support teachers’ subject knowledge and children at Key Stage 2 as appropriate.
The EYFS framework is structured very differently to the national curriculum as it is organised across seven areas of learning rather than subject areas. The most relevant statements for music are taken from the following areas of learning:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Expressive Arts and design
Within our EYFS, children’s Music skills are challenged through ongoing levelled continuous provision and targeted implicit and explicit challenges linked to the EYFS framework.
The Music curriculum is plotted on a two-year cycle (Cycle A and Cycle B) with each mixed age cohort covering the key aspects of their key stage (Key Stage 1, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6). In the academic year 2023-24 we are covering Cycle B.
