Performance Information
2016 was the first year of the new Key Stage 1 & 2 tests in maths and English reading (and Vocabulary, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling at KS2).
2016’s tests were the first to reflect the new primary curriculum, which was introduced in 2014. The Department for Education designed this new curriculum to be on a par with the best education systems in the world, and to give each child the best start in life.
In Year 2, teachers made judgements based on how each child has performed in the classroom over the last two years, using the end of Key Stage tests as one piece of evidence to make these judgements. The reason for using tests as part of the assessment process is it gives teachers a way of comparing children against a consistent national standard. Test results were converted using what’s known as a scaled score, where a score of 100 means a child is working at the expected standard. A score below 100 indicates that a child needs more support and a score of 100 or above suggests a child is working at or above expectations for their age.
The same occurs in Year 6 to assess children’s writing. Their reading and mathematics scores, however, are calculated from SATs examinations alone. Like Year 2 children, their results are converted into scaled scores, where a child scoring more than 100 is working at the expected standard. The progress that Year 6 children make from their Year 2 starting points is detailed below.
Please note that for the academic years 2019-20 and 2020-21, statutory assessment procedures were suspended due to COVID-19. These have since been reinstated.
