Curriculum Structure

At Moorside Primary Academy, we have developed a curriculum based on the needs of our children. Progression documents act as a guide to staff in terms of typical development. It is an expectation all staff adapt and refine curriculum plans to meet the stage of development of children within their class as and when appropriate.

Our curriculum allows children to learn, develop their skills and progress through imagination, curiosity, flexibility, independence, trust, openness and problem solving. As a school we have carefully planned an interesting and exciting range of topics which are firmly rooted in the National Curriculum 2014 and clear progression documents. Children’s understanding of the spiritual, social, moral and cultural elements of the curriculum are woven though all subjects as they underpin all areas of the curriculum. Specific events are timetabled termly to enhance children’s understanding of ‘Britishness’ in terms of heritage and culture.

We believe our curriculum is broad, balanced but above all inspiring to all.

We organise our classes into single cohort and mixed age groups based on the three phases of primary education dependent upon cohort sizes. These change and vary year on year. Currently we have EYFS, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 (Year 5/6 merge on an afternoon).

  • Foundation Stage – Nursery and Reception
  • Key Stage One – Year One/Year Two
  • Lower Key Stage Two – Year Three/Four
  • Upper Key Stage Two – Year Five/Six

As a result of this we operate a rolling programme of Year A and Year B for all subjects (with the exception of msths where White Rose mixed age plans are used) to ensure coverage of all curriculum areas.

Curriculum Plans

Due to small cohort sizes and mixed-age classes, curriculum planning for Science, PE, Computing, history, geography and other foundation subjects are taught on a rolling programme. This cycle will continue on a rolling basis until cohort sizes increase. PHSE is taught in all areas of the curriculum as detailed in the PHSE overview term on term, through assemblies, Specific Focus weeks and also as part of Fantastic Fridays.

Reading and Phonics

At Moorside Primary School we firmly believe that good phonics teaching is at the heart of successful early reading and writing experiences. We have undertaken substantial investment in terms of staff training in order to ensure all staff have a thorough understanding of the role synthetic phonics plays in teaching children to read and write. Find out more about our approach to reading and phonics on our website.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

At Moorside Primary School, we believe that inclusive education means providing all pupils with appropriate education and support alongside their peers. The Curriculum is all the planned activities that the school organises in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. Further information can be found in the SEND Information Report.

If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail please contact the school to arrange an appointment.

Remote Learning

In the event that school or classes go back to remote learning, our Remote Learning Policy will be followed with live lessons and children’s work being uploaded to their Teams accounts each day. Printed work packs will be made to accompany lessons and devices will be made available to children who don’t have access at home. Please see our School Policies section of our website for the Remote Learning Policy.
