PSHE & RHE
Personal Development Subject Coordinator Mrs A Charlton
At Moorside Primary Academy Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) including Relationships and Health Education (RHE) is at the heart of our school values and ethos and runs throughout all that we do in terms of respect and responsibility. It sits alongside our whole school respect and positive relationships strategy and our focus on the Zones of Regulation. We have a key focus on building healthy relationships so children develop a clear understanding of what a positive relationship is.
As a primary school our core purpose is supporting children to be the best they can be through our values of working hard and aiming high. Our PSHRE curriculum aims to enable our children to become healthy, safe, independent, responsible members of society who demonstrate respect and tolerance and who are prepared to face and manage the challenges and opportunities of an ever-changing modern Britain. We aim to equip them to be well round individuals who are ready to play an active part in society.
We recognise that due to the challenges in some areas of our community many of our children do not have wider life experiences and this can narrow their view of the world. Through our PSHRE curriculum we aim to broaden this view and develop aspirations beyond their immediate environment. Inspiring respect, responsibility, confidence and resilience are key to our children’s futures. We ensure that we draw children’s attention to our School Values, British Values and SMSC as we map these explicitly across the curriculum involving children within this process so that the implicit becomes explicit.
We want children to be the best they can be regardless of their starting points, to have dreams for their future and know what is required to reach them. We provide opportunities for our pupils to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a valuable member of an ever-changing diverse society. We will help them to understand and consider many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up in Modern Britain. We want to deepen our pupils’ understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance developing their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We want to help our pupils to understand the importance of their physical and mental health, understand emotions and feelings and have strategies to help them become resilient and confident so they are ready for all transitions whether this is to their next class or Secondary school so they are ready for the next steps in their school journey.
Across EYFS this links to personal development. In Early years we focus very much on developing children’s early social skills such as sharing, turn taking and self care and children within our setting take part in PHSCE sessions as well as engaging with Lola Leopard and Beat Baby to ensure that they engage with a curriculum at an age appropriate level.
Our PSHRE curriculum is also reflected in our school values of Aiming High, Staying Safe, Working Hard, Respect and Kindness with these being enhanced through the use of specific assemblies and further SCARF assemblies across the week. We thread our core values through all aspects of school life and PHSE as we believe these are the fundamental foundations to support children in their wider lives.
